Filipino American History Month is celebrated annually in October, commemorating the first recorded arrival of the Filipinos in the United States - as sailors aboard the Spanish galleon Nuestra senora de Esperanza - at Morro Bay, California on October 18, 1587. The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) established October as Filipino American History Month ni 1992. In 2009, Congress recognized the month of October officially as Filipino American History Month, serving to highlight the achievements and contributions of Filipino Americans.
